At the Pelican we follow the government’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) ‘curriculum’  combined with a Montessori approach.

The EYFS is really a frame work that combines how the government requires nurseries to work with young children with a set of statements across the different areas of development against which a child’s progress can be measured.

The Montessori philosophy and teaching method marries well with the EYFS, treating each child as unique and allowing us to spot their particular enthusiasms at any time and then provide the relevant activities to meet their specific interests. This is when real ‘learning’ happens with very young children.

If this sounds alarming, the priority at the Pelican is firmly on making sure the children are safe and cared for & that they have great fun. The ‘curriculum’ for 2 year olds is entirely play based. More formal teaching sessions begin only when the child is ready for them.
